Growing your own food is NOT easy. That is what I have learned! My hats off to the farmers.
I have planted fruit trees: peach, pear, fig, mulberry, apricot, plum, apple… and guess what? The squirrles eat EVERYTHING before they are even ripe.
My garden failed two years in a row. It was just too hot and the ground was so hard. I even have a 400 gallon rain barrel running from a gutter from my house with a water hose running down (gravity fed) to my garden. I even tilled the ground first and used fertilizer. So gardening didn’t work for me. A lot of back breaking work went into it and I was very disappointed. I do have a large food storage. Maybe someone else can have more success in growing a garden, at least I have seeds.

I agree with her sooo much. I have been growing my own food this spring. I planted (organic heirlooms) including lettuce, golden peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic, basil and oregano. When I look inside my greenhouse (which I built) and see all the things that I grew myself. I wanna cry with happiness. You are most certainly depression free when you grow your own food!
Granulated sugar stores indefinitely. Yes, if your bucket has a good rubber gasket, it will keep the bugs out. Personally, I keep my long term sugar in a sealed mylar bag, in a bucket. (NO OXYGEN ABSORBER!) I store too much sugar to put it in jars. I seal brown sugar in vacuum seal bags.
@katzcradul Does sugar store long? will the 5 gallon pails seal well enough to keep bugs out? how do You store pasta? I can store small amounts in glass but too expensive to store a LOT this way and plastic just does not seem to keep the bugs out.

@LordShivasServant just bought 62 more pounds of sugar last night, 50# white, and 12# of brown. Sugar will be our new ‘gold’.
