I think it would be worth your time to do some research and find out who to get to take a soil smple- only if you are truly interested…! Scientists LOVE that! Good luck, I think you have stumbled upon something pretty cool… maybe call your local county extension agent and let them handle it… ya never know!
Thanks! Maybe I can sell some of my soil! Very interesting.
hmm, well, the most common cause of the collapse of a high density gypsy moth population (sounds like yall had a high density) is a viral disease known as ‘wilt’… its a phenomenon called an ‘epizootic’ … it usually doesnt happen to small populations of the catrpillrs, only large populations… the virus can actually live in the soil, and i have heard that they are trying to harness the virus to use it against the gypsy moth, especially since they can do some serious damage to hardwoods…
But here’s the thing: We never got any moths! All those caterpillars were dead, by the thousands, up and down our oak trees. Not quiet or dormant, but dead. They never emerged into moths! How can that be?
heehee… you are welcome!
Locusts were bad this year here in georgia… but the jap beetles werent because of our drought last year. Dont let the eggs “get ahead” of you. Yall dont want to lose the Oaks, which can be possible! Use something to control them- especially if you are sure it was locusts.. you will have to kill the baby locusts. Thanks for writing! Blessin’s, melissa
See, the caterpillars hatched & started eating the leaves, then around july they build a cocoon and stay in it for abt 2 weeks, then emerge as an adult moth, then, moths mate and lay their eggs around august, and the adults die. If youre worried abt the trees, use bacillus thuringiensis (BT) early next yr when the caterpillars are young. its a stomach poison for them and its organic! yay! look at my video on jap beetles, i talk about BT on there. Thanks so much for the comment! Blessin’s, melissa
i see all your video now..you know wearing glove..lol…thanks a lot…love u
The locust insect, can’t think of the name of them,(Katydids?) back in the spring, was bad this year, and when they laid their eggs in the oak trees and others, the ends of the branch leaves died.
But thanks for the video, I didn’t know about Boxwood leafminers.
We had a hundred thousand gypsy moth caterpillars eating our oak and maple leaves, and leaving all kinds of droppings, at the beginning of summer this year. Then, for reasons I don’t know, and thank goodness, they all died one week, and the moths never emerged.
